Surrey Players Pool League Match Rules

Please note that this set of rules is intended as a guideline. The League is intended to be on a good faith basis, and the Committee and Players are expected to behave in that manner. The Committee reserves the right to make alterations to these rules, should it be deemed necessary.

1.      League matches will be played in several divisions and fixtures will be determined by way of a numbered draw. The fixture list will already exist, and players shall fit into the fixture list, depending on the number they are drawn with. All matches will be scheduled for a Wednesday evening, and every attempt should be made to play them on the set date.

2.      It is intended that three players from each division will change places by way of promotion / relegation at the end of the season, although this is not guaranteed, should the size of the divisions change.

3.      Should any player be unavailable to play on a specific date, they should notify the Divisional Delegate as soon as possible but definitely before the date of the match, so that there is an opportunity for the Delegate, or Fixture Secretary to rearrange that week’s fixtures. No match can be played after the final date set for matches, although there will be spare weeks allocated throughout the season. If any player is unavailable for the last match, then that match will be brought forward.

4.      In the event of an unplayed league match, the Committee have the option to determine the likely score of this match, and award the relevant points, including win bonus, to any player or players who were not at fault for this match being unplayed in the first place. However, it should be noted that such a decision should only be taken, when there is no realistic possibility of such a game being rearranged before the end of the season.  The Committee can use whichever factors they believe are relevant in determining such a result, although previous SPPL results between the players, and current league position are to be the most useful indicators.

5.      Each match will consist of 11 frames played in accordance with the recognised World Rules. The time limit however, will not be strictly enforced, although the Divisional Delegate has the right to insist that it be used should he feel it necessary. Players are reminded that they should be attempting to play their shots within one minute. Each frame won will earn one point, with a two-point bonus for the match winner.

6.      Each match will have a designated ‘home’ player. They are responsible for paying the cost of the match (currently £5). There will be no toss of a coin, as the home player will break off in the first frame of the match, with alternate breaks following.

7.      The final League placings will be determined on the basis of the most points won. If two or more players are level on points, then matches won will be the deciding factor. Should players still be level and a prize or qualifying position is involved, then the head-to-head result will be the deciding factor. A play-off will only be arranged if the placings are still not established and a prize or qualifying position is involved (the format of which would be determined by the Committee). If there is no play off, the position will be a joint one.

8.      Each match will have a designated start time of either 7.30pm or 8.45pm. If tables are available earlier, the Divisional Delegate may start a game before its official start time. The League reserves the right to suspend an early session match that has not finished by 10pm. In the event of a late session match running late, the match should continue until at least 11.15pm, at which point, either player may leave at the end of the current frame. If however, both players and the venue are happy for the match to continue, then it can continue for as long as the parties agree.

9.      If a match is unfinished, every effort will be made to schedule the remaining frames for as soon as possible afterwards. In the event of any match not being fulfilled, then the Committee will make a decision regarding the outcome.

10. Should any player leave the League during the season, then all points won by them and by their opponents will be removed, and the Committee will decide whether they should be allowed into subsequent leagues run by the Surrey Players Pool League.

11. All members will behave in a respectable manner, and display courtesy to their opponents and other players whilst on, or off the table. Excessive noise is distracting, and not necessary in a good faith league such as ours. Any breach of this rule could incur various penalties at the discretion of the committee, which may even include removal from the league with loss of any potential prize money.

12. Should any disputes arise between players then the Divisional Delegate is the Senior Referee on the day and will have the final decision – although they have the right to defer a decision to a more qualified source, should one be available. Should any player be unhappy with such a decision, they can request the Committee to look in to it.
